Nic Leonhardt is Associate Professor/ Senior Lecturer (German title: Privatdozentin) of Theatre Studies. Since October 2016 she is senior researcher and associate director of the ERC (=European Research Council) project “Developing Theatre” at LMU Munich as well as director of the Centre for Global Theatre History.

Together with visual artist Reza Nassrollahi, she is running the global art and charity project 1001SOUL.

Her 3rd monograph, Theater über Ozeane,  a study on transatlantically operating cultural entrepreneurs and agents at the turn of the 20th century, came out in 2018. The book has recently been translated and will soon be published under the title Theatre Across Oceans with Palgrave Macmillan.

From October 2015 until September 2016, Nic held the position of visiting professor of Inter Artes at the University of Cologne, Department for Media Cultures and Theatre.

Her research interests and activities are (global/ transnational/ transregional) theatre, media and cultural history, visual culture, urban studies, philanthropy and cultural development in the 20th century as well as contemporary digital cultures. Her work is notable for a strong interdisciplinary and transnational approach. She studied theatre studies and audiovisual media, German literature, art history and musicology at the universities of Erlangen-Nuremberg and Mainz. After completing her M.A. and Ph.D. studies in Mainz she worked in research projects at the University of Music in Cologne, the University of Music and Theatre in Leipzig, as a guest lecturer at Barnard College and Columbia University in New York City, and at the Cluster of Excellence Asia and Europe in a Global Context in Heidelberg. From 2010-2015 she was associate director of the DFG project Global Theatre Histories (www.gth.theaterwissenschaft.uni-muenchen.de) and a lecturer at the Department of Theatre Studies Munich.
